Weekly Email 1-12-23

Dear Common Ground Friends,

I have been appreciating being back working and teaching in our beautiful city center. We just completed the year end retreat with folks sitting together in the same room for the first time since the pandemic. Although a significant portion of the community only participates through zoom or our youtube channel, the center in Minneapolis is still in many ways the hub of our community. I want to acknowledge the many people who care for our building and grounds, from the people doing the weekly cleaning of the bathrooms and floors, to the hardworking members of the building committee, the fearless snow team, the mowing team, those folks who design the flower arrangements for all the altars, and the garden volunteers who have created such an inviting outdoor space. Besides these folks who take care of the building we have dedicated volunteers helping in the office, helping with technology, and editing the Dharma talks and getting them up online. There are many folks volunteering to be program hosts, practice leaders for the open sitting periods, and community group facilitators. We have folks volunteering to be on the Finance Committee, the Ethic and Reconciliation Council, and of course the Board of Directors. Of course there are many more ways that people take care of the Common Ground community. And, all this together is the dynamic circle of giving and receiving that makes Common Ground possible. Just sensing all this generosity is a cause for happiness for me and hopefully for you as well.

Longtime Community Leader, Steve Burt, had a successful quadruple bypass operation on Monday, January 9th. He is resting well in the hospital and looking forward to getting back on his feet. You can send your healing wishes to Steve by going to his Caringbridge Site.

With Gratitude,
Mark Nunberg

The Practice of Generosity

Continuing in the tradition of Buddhist monasteries in Southeast Asia, all programs at Common Ground are offered free of charge in the spirit of generosity. This offering is possible because of the generosity of people like you—from the Buddha on down to all the people in our community—who contribute their practice, time, and financial resources to support the continuation of the center.

To learn how to support the center and our teachers, visit this page. Let us know if you have any questions.

Current Volunteer Needs
Please contact Robin Major at robin@commongroundmeditation.org if you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities:

  • Cleaning: We are looking for folks to help out with ongoing cleaning at our city center. If you regularly come to a program in person and are willing to spend 15-30 minutes before or after doing some cleaning, please email shelly@commongroundmeditation.org
  • Website Volunteer: We are hoping to re-do our website in the coming months. If you have experience building websites and are interested in helping with this, please write an email of interest to Robin.
  • Plant Pots: We are looking for two large terracotta, ceramic, or nicely made resin pots for plants at the retreat center. The pots should be at least 15in in diameter.

Weekly Tejaniya

Unskillful mental qualities are up-
rooted in two ways. One is that you sim-
ply become aware of them, and they nat-
urally disappear. In this case, awareness
does the work. The other way is that un-
derstanding arises about whatever un-
skillful quality is present. In this
case, wisdom does the work.
