Weekly Email 5/19/22
Dear Friends,
The tragic racist killings in Buffalo, New York have exposed again the simple truth that hate warps the heart in ways that can allow someone to commit terrible acts. White supremacy, anti semitism, sexism, and so many other expressions of hate continue to reverberate in our communities, and more importantly in our own hearts. How can we take responsibility for all the little and big ways we justify hate and fear? How can we learn to make conscious the hidden roots of hate that lie latent in our hearts? If we really want to care for the African American community, and so many other communities of folks who are being regularly targeted due to ignorance and hate, then we must do something that leads to real change. Being real and honest is a noble starting place. We continue by learning how to uncover and more deeply trust the heart’s capacity for tenderness, vulnerability and the healing power of metta (spiritual love), especially in those places where our heart wants to close down or turn toward the more familiar ground of fear and hate (this also includes expressions of self hate). Finally, each of us in our own way must find a brave and deep resolve to engage our life with our imperfect love and wisdom for the benefit and liberation of all beings. No one can tell us how to do this, instead the sensitive and wise heart demands a turning toward and a natural responsivity to all that it sees and feels.
Wishing the deepest healing and awakening for all beings,
Mark and Shelly

The Practice of Generosity
Continuing in the tradition of Buddhist monasteries in Southeast Asia, all programs at Common Ground are offered free of charge in the spirit of generosity. This offering is possible because of the generosity of people like you—from the Buddha on down to all the people in our community—who contribute their practice, time, and financial resources to support the continuation of the center.
To learn how to support the center and our teachers, visit this page. Let us know if you have any questions.
