Dear Common Ground Friends,
The Buddha spoke often about patience as a steady strength of heart. Patience is what allows us to stay present with discomfort without immediately trying to resolve it, avoid it, or push through it. It allows wisdom the time it needs to develop. When patience is strong, equanimity is strong. We become less easily pulled around by unpleasant experiences, finding a steadiness that is available even here.
Patience also helps balance our effort in practice. Sometimes we bring too much energy, striving, tightening, and wanting things to happen. Other times our energy fades and we drift into discouragement or complacency. The Buddha encouraged a balanced effort, and patience is what helps us find it. Patience grows through consistent practice rather than force or hurry. Patiently returning, again and again, we learn to trust this simple and ordinary moment, allowing the heart to mature in its own time.
Wishing us all a deeper connection with patience in the week ahead.
Peace,
