At the retreat property we practice what is called “Noble Silence” in our tradition. As a general guideline retreatants can ask themselves before speaking, “Are these words I am about to speak necessary; are they an improvement on silence?”

Ideally, all talking and other forms of communication are reduced to “necessary speech”, just what is needed to efficiently take care of the functioning of the retreat center without creating a tight or fearful relationship around appropriate verbal interactions. When the communication is not urgent, consider leaving a simple note. Noble Silence is a training principle to explore and learn from, not something to get tight about.

At the heart of a retreat experience is a radical simplification of one’s environment. We are secluding the mind from many of the ordinary distractions of daily life. While on retreat, notice how this seclusion quiets and steadies the mind. Reducing speech to the bare minimum, avoiding unnecessary eye contact with others, and refraining from all media and writing (with the exception of listening to or studying teachings), are at the heart of skillful retreating.

Please plan to have your phone turned completely off during your retreat. You can also choose to give it to the practice leader for safekeeping during your retreat. You can give your loved ones the retreat center’s phone number in case they have to reach you during the retreat: 715-455-4000. If you have any concerns about this, please let us know. Putting aside our duties and responsibilities for a period of time is one of the most supportive aspects of a silent retreat.

The phone and internet connection at CG Retreat Center are to be used only for emergency communication or retreat operations. Please also minimize unnecessary noises and other disturbing activities so as to protect the quiet of other retreatants. Please open and close doors mindfully so as to avoid loud sounds.
