When Anger Becomes a Teacher: A Workshop with Amma Thanasanti

Most of us have been taught that anger is a problem to be solved — suppressed, expressed, managed, or transcended. But what if the problem isn't the anger itself? What if the problem is that we haven't yet understood what it is trying to tell us?

Through teaching, guided practice, and small group inquiry, we will work with a central question:

What kind of anger is this, and what does it need?

The framework presented in this workshop identifies twelve distinct forms, each arising from different conditions, carrying different intelligences, and calling for different responses. No one would respond to grief, joy, fear, and shame with the same intervention. Anger deserves the same precision. Once we recognize what kind of anger we are experiencing, its intelligence becomes easier to hear, the appropriate response becomes clearer, and a deeper freedom becomes possible.

In this workshop we will explore two forms: ordinary everyday anger — the kind that arises in relationships, misunderstandings, and the small frustrations of daily life — and activist anger, the anger that arises in response to injustice and collective harm. Both are real. Both are teachers. Both deserve to be understood rather than simply managed.

This is not a workshop about becoming less angry. It is about understanding anger well enough that it becomes a source of clarity rather than confusion, a compass rather than a burden.

All experiential components are optional. You are in charge of your level of engagement throughout. Backing off or slowing down is understood as wise and skillful practice.

All are welcome. No prior attendance required.

Common Ground offers all programs freely in the spirit of generosity. If you'd like to volunteer or donate to support the teacher(s) and the center, visit https://commongroundmeditation.org/donate. If you donate, be sure to enter "Amma Thanasanti" in the Teacher/Program box. 2/3 of the donation supports the teacher(s) and 1/3 supports the general operations of the center.
